The Truth about Ab Exercises

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

There is no dout that belly exercises are one of the hottest and the most controversial topics in the fitness and exercise industry. Hundreds of ab gadgets, gimmicks, and exercise machines have flooded the market for people who are seeking sexier and flatter stomach… that sexy six-pack belly appearance that everyone seeks.

Unfortunately, most of the belly exercises that are suggested all over the cyberspace, and in magazines, etc, are not effective for you to build that six-pack belly. First and foremost, the most important aspect for good looking 6pack abs is getting rid of the excess stomach fat that is covering them up. Honestly speaking, most people already have decent abdominals underneath, yet the sixpack abdominal muscle are just covered up by all of that excess flabby belly fat.

If you want to reduce much more body fat and get a flatter sexy sixpacks abs, you should focus the majority of your training time with special combinations of high intensity entire body, multi-joint workouts instead of focusing so much on belly exercises. The top exercises for getting rid of that ab fat are those workouts that work the largest portion of your body at one time.

In fact, to gain the biggest metabolic bang for your buck in terms of belly fat loss, you need to do exercises that work the large muscle groups of the legs, upper and lower back, and chest, etc… Combining these types of big multi-joint exercises in high intensity super-set, tri-set, or circuit mode gives you the greatest fat-burning and metabolism boosting response from your workouts.

And that is one of the best kept tips for flatter sexy belly that are actually visible as a sixpack!

Now when it comes to ab-specific exercises, another mistake most folks make is mindlessly pumping away with hundreds of crunches and other nonmeaningful belly exercises that hardly give your abdominals much resistance to work against. If you really want to build up your belly to the best extent possible, don’t waste your time on exercises which you can do more than twenty or twenty-five reps… that means you’re definitely not doing an exercise that provides enough resistance to the abdominals. If you want workouts that works great for your belly, just do those exercises that give you enough resistance to get you down into the 6-15 rep range per set.

Usually, higher resistance stomach exercises that provide a much greater stimulus to the abdominals come in the form of exercises that involve raising/curling the legs and pelvis either upward or inward closer to the trunk. Several great examples of these higher resistance belly exercises are hanging leg raises or knee raises using a “pelvic curl up”, or an exercise like lying hip thrusts. Many times, the same people who can do fifty or a hundred crunches, can’t even complete more than two or three properly executed hanging leg raises.

If you really want toned abs that look like a sixpack, remember that getting rid of that excess stomach fat is the MOST important factor. Also, when it comes to ab-specific exercises, always remember higher resistance exercises that involve curling/raising the legs and pelvis upward or inward are what builds up the belly to the best extent possible.
