How long to exercise on bike to lose weight?

Is an exercise bike an effective workout equipment that can help you lose weight? If yes, then how long should you exercise on bike every day in order to lose weight? Is biking better than running?
P.S. I got a bike yesterday and plan to ride the bike everyday to get rid of a bit of flab on thighs and reduce my weight.

    Ride for more than half an hour per day, 4-5 days every week.
    Generally speaking, it is hard to go for 30 minutes biking at the beginning, you can start with 10 minutes, then steadily exercise longer.
    I think biking is as good as running, you can alternate running and biking. This should be better.
